[Sunyu Hong Kong] Sometimes a Simple Condolence Can Make You Happy

We got to know Mrs. Chiang through our visit. She lives with her son and relies on OALA. She is in average health and has undergone cataract surgery before.

During the visit, Mrs. CHIANG told us that she had five children but they seldom cared for her, while her son, who lived with her, was suspected to be mentally challenged and thus could not care for her. As a result, she felt lonely and depressed. We tried to understand her and encourage her to participate in more activities. She responded that sometimes she played mahjong with her friends, but she was more reluctant to participate in activities at the elderly center because she found it difficult to integrate.

To enhance her motivation to participate in activities, we collected suitable activities in the estate that she was interested in and introduced them to her. In addition, we also took her to visit the elderly center to reduce her anxiety through companionship. We hope that granny can join the activity groups in the center to strengthen her community support.

She thanked us for our help this time. In the future, we will help her again when she needs help. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact your local social worker or leave a message to us at "Sunyu Academy" and we will try our best to answer your questions and provide appropriate assistance. Talking more with the elderly and keeping them company can reduce their sense of loneliness, and to a certain extent, prevent the occurrence of geriatric depression. Accompaniment is not about giving them advice all the time, but just focusing on listening to them or doing things with them, such as going out for a walk, doing simple stretching, eating meals, doing activities they are interested in, and not letting them feel they are alone, can help them reduce the negative emotions brought by loneliness.
