Vulnerable and physically challenged

Taipei Community Life Support Center: Paving the way to a new and better life for the physically and mentally challenged with "heart".

Founding Background:

Decades ago, parents with mentally handicapped children not only did not have the support of early therapeutic education, but also did not dare to think about their children's future as adults. Even when they had to queue up for the chance to receive national compulsory education in elementary school, and when they repeatedly went to various schools and found that their children had been abandoned by the national education system, they could not help but think whether such an environment was fair to their children.

This group of parents of mentally challenged children decided to come forward, not only to fight for their own children's rights, but also to open up a path for other children and families in the same situation. They shed their ordinary identities as housewives, civil servants or office workers, and learned to publish publications, submit books, organize parent groups, and even hold up banners to present their case in the Legislative Yuan.

In 1976, the Reality Check Foundation was established as the first self-sustaining organization in Taiwan founded by parents of the mentally and physically challenged, and the members of the Board of Directors of Reality Check are still mainly parents.

Starting with one phone and one staff member, we have grown to a team of more than 500 staff members serving 6,000 people with mental disabilities each year. Starting from a community home that provided residential services for adults with mental disabilities, we now have a full range of professional support such as early therapeutic care for people aged 0-6 years old, vocational rehabilitation for people aged 18 years old and above, daytime care, nighttime accommodations, community support services, and elderly care services. Taiwan's mentally handicapped and their families to provide excellent service quality, this road has the tears of parents, but also the selfless love of many people.
