Many physically and mentally challenged people are unable to carry out activities of daily living due to illness. The use of assistive devices can help the physically and mentally challenged or the elderly to increase their independence, save the efforts of family members in caring for them, and make them feel more comfortable. In order to enable those in need of assistive devices to effectively obtain appropriate assistive devices and related resources, the First Social Welfare Foundation has established the First Assistive Device Center since 1984, which is the first assistive device service unit in the country and is committed to providing professional advice on assistive devices.
Since 2004, we have taken over the "Taipei City Assistive Devices Service Program for the Physically and Mentally Handicapped - Southern District Assistive Devices Service" (now renamed as the Southern District Assistive Devices Center of the Social Affairs Bureau of the Taipei City Government), and from 2013 to the end of 2016, we took over the "Taipei City Haiyi Assistive Devices Center", and we will continue to take over the center in 2019, and will continue to provide assistive device consulting, referrals, evaluations, maintenance, loans, and publicity and exhibition services. Since then, we have provided over 140,000 person-times of assistive device services.
(a) Those who are domiciled and actually reside in Taipei City and have a physical or mental handicap handbook or certificate issued by the City (except for cases that have been referred by other county or city governments or assistive device centers that have a need for an assistive device evaluation in the City).
(b) The applicant for the loan of auxiliary aids only needs to be domiciled and actually reside in the city.
Our professional team of aids evaluators, social workers and repair technicians provide the following services:
(1) Assistive device counseling and referral: Provision of information on assistive devices and referral to related resources.
(2) Auxiliary aids assessment: For those who need auxiliary aids, we will conduct an auxiliary aids assessment proposal and open an assessment proposal for the purchase or lease of auxiliary aids with government subsidies.
(3) Assistive device review (fit verification): To enhance the depth of the assistive device evaluation service, we provide fit verification and training on the use of assistive devices for complex cases or complex assistive device items. We provide a complete service process from evaluation, product trial, assisting the public in communicating with manufacturers to confirm actual demand for the product, and fitting after delivery, to ensure the correct use of assistive devices and to avoid the incorrect use of devices that may cause physical deformation or injuries.
(4) Auxiliary aids maintenance: In order to extend the life of auxiliary aids, auxiliary aids that have exceeded their service life will be provided with auxiliary aids maintenance service.
(5) Borrowing of aids: For those who need short-term aids, we provide free borrowing of short-term second-hand aids. Before borrowing and returning the aids, please call to make an appointment, prepare the borrower's ID card (must be a Taipei resident), and apply in person at the Center.
(6) Recycling of aids: In order to promote environmental protection and reuse of aids, we provide second-hand aids recycling service.
(7) Display of aids: The Center displays a variety of thematic aids, including children's aids, life aids, silver hair aids, mobility aids, computer and communication aids, visual aids, etc. The public is welcome to visit and experience the Center, and please call to make a reservation for a group visit.
