Vulnerable and physically challenged

[Sunyu Taiwan] How a $100,000 Subsidy Changed the Lives of Protectors of Families in the Middle Kingdom

According to Taiwan's latest social welfare report, the problem of old houses in remote areas is becoming more and more serious, and many disadvantaged families are unable to make the necessary repairs due to financial difficulties, which leads to an increase in home safety hazards. Many studies have investigated the need for repair and renovation in remote areas and found that the living environment of many families in remote areas does not meet safety standards, and that the elderly and physically and mentally challenged people living alone are particularly at risk. In this regard, the government and related social welfare organizations are actively promoting the "Mainland and Rural Disadvantaged Families Touch-up and Repair Subsidy Program" in the hope that more families can enjoy safe and comfortable living environments through the use of subsidized resources.

I. Who can apply? Comprehensive analysis of subsidized targets

The "Remote Rural Disadvantaged Family Repair Grant Program" is designed for families with financial difficulties or special needs, and the following are the three main categories of eligibility:

  1. Economically Disadvantaged: Including low-income households, lower-middle-income households, or those with an annual household income below $600,000
  2. Special Needs: People with physical or mental disabilities at home or elderly people aged 65 or above who live alone.
  3. Residents of remote villages: Residents who are domiciled in the remote villages declared by the Executive Yuan and actually reside in those areas.

These eligibility criteria are designed to ensure that resources are targeted to the families that need them most.

II. Subsidy Criteria and Items: Getting It Right the First Time

The grant program not only provides financial assistance, but also supports a variety of aspects of home safety:

  1. Amount of subsidy: Each household can receive a maximum subsidy of $100,000 over a period of three years.
  2. Subsidized Projects: Focuses on home safety repairs and assisted living devices, including:

    • Installation of barrier-free facilities (e.g., indoor handrails, bathroom aids).
    •
    • Improvements to indoor anti-slip features and lighting.
    •
    • Repairing and upgrading of plumbing and electrical lines.
    •
    • Other necessary works to enhance residential safety.

These grants cover all aspects of home safety and are particularly suitable for families with elderly or physically or mentally challenged members, making the home a real haven.

Simple and transparent application process, professional team to assist in the whole process.

Applying for grants is no longer a cumbersome process, and the program provides a one-stop shop for applicants to complete it easily:

  1. Referral application: Application is made through a long-term care service unit, school, hospital or social welfare organization.
  2. Qualification: Professionals and builders come to your home to assess your needs and financial situation.
  3. Audit and signing: After confirming the subsidized items, the three parties will sign a contract to ensure the transparency of the contents of the repair.
  4. Construction and Acceptance: A professional construction team will come to your home to complete the repairs and conduct an acceptance inspection.
  5. Case closure and write-off: After the repair is completed, the case is formally closed with a write-off.

This process design not only improves efficiency, but also allows each step to be clearly tracked, ensuring transparency and effectiveness in the use of resources.

IV. Importance of home security

According to research, the most common hazards in older homes include slippery floors, deteriorating electrical wiring and inadequate lighting, which are often the main causes of accidental injuries. For the elderly and the physically and mentally challenged in particular, the lack of barrier-free facilities may result in limited mobility or even life-threatening injuries. Therefore, making necessary repairs and upgrading facilities not only improves the quality of living, but also significantly reduces the risk of accidents and protects the health and safety of family members.
