[Sunyu Taiwan] 1966 Long-Term Care Resources
Chen Yizhen, a 15-year-old from Yilan County, is dependent on her mother and grandmother and used to work on the streets as a resource recycler. When her mother was often in and out of the hospital due to illness, Chen Yizhen stayed with her and accompanied her constantly. In school, she is a gentle personality, diligent and studious, and she participates in all kinds of competitions. Chen Yizhen's father died of terminal liver cancer at the age of 39, 10 months later, and her grandmother suffered from Parkinson's disease and lung cancer and was bedridden, unable to take care of herself. She and her mother took care of everything together and told themselves that life is a long struggle, and that there is no obstacle they can't overcome, and that they will do their best to give their family a life free of worry and food and clothing. Taiwan has entered an aging society, with the elderly population over 65 accounting for 14.36% of the total population. According to government statistics, there are 3,671,000 elderly people over the age of 65, of whom 487,000 are in need of long-term care, an increase of 176,000 in 10 years, and if the average time of need for long-term care is 7.3 years, the expenditure on long-term care may be as high as 3.5 million dollars. With aging, there are many challenges, including the gradual increase in the proportion of disabled and mentally retarded people, and the need to pay more attention to issues such as the deployment of manpower and resources for care and family caregivers. Those who have lost their physical and mental functions need more support and assistance from external resources, such as related life care services, respite services, and professional health care services.
