基隆市黃姓工程師多年前妻子罹病後就獨自照顧身心障礙、行動不便的女兒，每天帶著她上、下班。今年6月2日中午，鄰居發現黃男家中傳出臭味，且多日未見父女二人出現，擔心兩人狀況，報警處理。警方打開黃家後，發現父女躺在房內，已死亡多日，因黃男遺體腐敗較女兒嚴重，初步推測黃女因父親死後無人照顧，伴屍數日後身亡。 在台灣大多數居住在社區的身心障礙者，均是由父母、手足等(親人)擔任主要照顧者角色，而身心障礙者因身體的特殊性，隨著年齡增長，導致他們在超過35歲就逐漸邁向老化階段，而老化的身障者加上高齡親人的組合，我們稱之為「雙老家庭」。根據統計，台灣的智能障礙者家庭，77%的被照顧者，已經進入老憨兒階段，於是他們更高齡的父母，必須挺著年邁身軀繼續照顧，一旦病逝，家中又沒有其他親人可以接續照顧的話，這些老憨兒連基本的生活自理都不會，生活將立刻陷入困境。台灣將邁入超高齡化社會，使得「雙老家庭」比例逐年升高，台灣身障者家庭正面臨身障者與其照顧者雙重老化之現象，已成為明顯趨勢。

近來由於疫情關係，許多老年人因子女較無法陪伴或探視，或因對疫情的恐慌、焦慮開始出現失眠、食慾不佳、甚至整天鬱鬱寡歡的情形；而原本即有憂鬱症的老人，也因拿較長的處方籤，甚至因害怕到醫院藥物減量服用，而導致病情不穩甚至惡化。 台灣雅虎新聞2021年10月7日報導，臺北市立聯合醫院松德院區社區精神科主治醫師邱智強表示，2021年5、6月疫情較為嚴峻，導致8月後精神科急診及住院率出現報復性成長，特別又以老人家患者最為明顯。根據台灣南部調查，社區中老年憂鬱症的比率一個月內約有15%的官能型憂鬱症，而較嚴重的重鬱症約占5%，也就是一個月內每20個老人就有一位會達到重鬱症的診斷，所以老年憂鬱症其實比我們想像的多。
