There are more than 530,000 persons with disabilities in Hong Kong and more than half of them are aged 60 or above. According to the statistics of the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), there are more than 530,000 persons with disabilities in Hong Kong and more than half of them are aged 60 or above, amounting to 58.9%. The allowances currently provided by the Government to support people with disabilities are divided into the Normal and Higher Disability Allowance (HDA), with the recipients receiving either a monthly cash allowance of $2,070 or $4,140, and there are about 170 000 recipients at present, accounting for about one-third of the total number of people with disabilities in Hong Kong. In fact, there are quite a number of organizations in the community that support the needs of people with disabilities.
