A 2-year-old child in New Taipei City, Taiwan was diagnosed with COVID-19 (2019 Coronavirus Disease) and consulted by doctors at Shuang He and National Taiwan University Hospitals (NTUH). Due to the rapid, rare and severe progression of the disease, which was unprecedented in the treatment of children in the past, the child died after several days of resuscitation and the use of antiviral medication. According to Johns Hopkins University, as of March of this year, more than 13,400 children and adolescents under the age of 20 had died of C pneumonia worldwide, with 42% of those deaths occurring in infants and children aged 0-9 years. With the increasing number of confirmed cases, the proportion of children infected with the disease also continues to rise. Lee Min-sheng, director of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital, said that parents should pay special attention to the early symptoms of the disease, such as a high fever of more than 39 degrees, fuzzy consciousness, shallow breathing, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, which may lead to severe illnesses.
