Disputes between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law are the biggest headache. A Hong Kong man living in a public rental housing (PRH) flat posted an article on the Internet, saying that he lived in a PRH flat with his wife, son and mother, and that the mother was the head of the flat. Recently, his wife and mother-in-law had a dispute, and the situation was so serious that his mother even wanted to get rid of her New Hope public housing tenancy, but the Hong Kong man was worried that it would affect his and his son's right of abode. After reading the post, many netizens expressed their sympathy for the wife's situation and criticized the Hong Kong man for abandoning his wife in the midst of a dispute between the mother-in-law and her mother-in-law, deriding him as a "mama's boy" and "marrying you is a real yin kung". Conditions for splitting PRH households: According to the Housing Department (HD), PRH tenants with serious and deep-rooted conflicts among family members or other reasonable and compassionate grounds will be considered by the HA on a case-by-case basis and, where necessary, referred to the relevant government departments/organizations for assessment and recommendation. If some family members indicate that they have no intention to request household splitting, requests for splitting from other family members will not be entertained. However, the latter may authorize the HA to refer their cases to SWD for appropriate assistance. Arrangements for voluntary joint households and split households requesting household splitting are as follows: 🔹 Subject to reasonable and compassionate grounds, the household must satisfy the following criteria Both the original household and the splitting household have to meet the requirements of the Home Ownership Scheme (HOS). If both parties pass the above tests, the HA will refer the case to the relevant government departments/organizations for assessment. If the case is recommended, the splitting household will be allocated a refurbished PRH flat in the New Territories. They may also choose to apply for subsidized home ownership through various subsidized home ownership schemes in lieu of public rental housing (PRH) allocation with Green Form status (valid for one year). Housing Arrangements after Divorce: What happens in the event of divorce? According to the HA, in view of the complexity of the divorce issue, a flexible approach will be adopted to handle such cases on a case-by-case basis in accordance with common sense. Generally speaking, the HD will not take the initiative to ask either party to move out during the separation period. Upon conclusion of the divorce proceedings, the tenant and/or his/her ex-spouse should contact the respective estate office and HD staff will explain the tenancy management policy to the divorced party through face-to-face interviews.
